Ecos Research Solutions Partners with the NRDC to Measure Television Energy Use

Ecos Research and Policy division partnered with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to measure the energy consumption of modern flat-panel televisions.

Ecos and the NRDC measured the power draw of Plasma and LCD televisions on display at big box retail stores and not surprisingly found that these TVs consume a significant amount of energy.
Some of the key research findings include:

  • Some less-efficient models consumed more electricity each year than a new refrigerator

  • Operating costs can be up to several hundred dollars over a 10-year life span

  • Plasma TVs consumed considerably more energy than equivalent LCD models

  • TVs now represent approximately 5% of residential electricity use and over 1% of all national electricity use

This research helped the NRDC in their efforts towards moving the industry into more efficient designs that could cut our nation’s power bill by up to $10 billion per year. The NRDC and Ecos will continue to partner on further research and policy initiatives and expect new developments on TV efficiency in the near future.
