Two of Ecos’ newest lighting programs – along with one very long-standing program – marked significant CFL milestones in December.
The PECO Residential Lighting Program in Pennsylvania distributed its one millionth CFL in late December with the help of Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek. While the one million mark may seem commonplace among residential lighting programs, this milestone was achieved in less than three months; the PECO lighting program launched in October 2009 and still has several months to go in its first program year.
Dayton Power & Light also ended its first-year program successfully, reaching the 1.5 million CFL mark in a program year that was only 10 months long, in a relatively new CFL market. “DP&L was very flexible and willing to expand marketing and education to allow us to connect with more customers,” said Program Manger Adam Maier. “We succeeded in convincing customers that even during an economic downturn CFLs are the way to go to save energy and money.”
NV Energy – which has partnered with Ecos since 2003 to implement its Residential Lighting Program – surpassed the 10 million total CFL mark in December. In the seven years since the first discounted bulbs landed on retailer shelves, the program grew from just over 42,000 bulbs sold in the first year to more than 3.5 million bulbs sold in the seventh year, for a total of more than 10 million CFLs,” said Program Manager Ian Guerry. “This was achieved through a unique combination of retail sales, community outreach, direct distribution and non-profit partnerships.”
10 million bulbs roughly equate to three CFLs for every man, woman and child in the state of Nevada. According to the EPA, the kWh savings from the 10 million CFLs are 593,495,669 kWh annually, which is enough energy to light 304,356 Nevada homes for one year.
